Rochester School for the Deaf
Where Families Expect More From Their School
And
Find It.
The Rochester School for the Deaf is an inclusive environment where children
who are deaf and hard of hearing can access an extraordinary, rich, and
rigorous education and families can access professionals with the skills,
dedication and desire to help build their child's successful future.
At RSD, families discover:
- Instruction is free from barriers. Each child's educational program
includes the development of spoken and written English as well as American
Sign Language giving children a more direct experience with their teachers
and our staff.
- Children are encouraged to explore and develop their leadership and
team building skills. By participating in our numerous sporting, student
government, public speaking, foreign exchange, scouting, and drama programs
as well as many other activities, our students' education goes well
beyond the standard curriculum.
- Our students and their families receive the support and special resources
they need-including American Sign Language classes, home visits to families
with toddlers, and availability of hearing aids and other assistive
devices. Families are encouraged and enabled to become actively involved
in their child's education throughout our schools.
- RSD professionals work in teams to develop individualized programs
to offer a diverse array of opportunities to students with a wide variety
of needs. From addressing varying levels of hearing to recognizing differing
occupational and career goals in life after school, students can explore
and grow on their own path.
The latest example of our commitment-
Subject Area Specialists for Teachers and Students
RSD has always stayed current with programs and technologies that make
a difference in the lives of deaf children and their families. Our success
as a private, New York State-supported school is recognized across the
country. The latest example of this commitment to providing the highest-level
education is the introduction of Subject Area Specialists.
Subject Area Specialists work with teachers to help them plan and implement
lesson plans that are aligned with New York State learning standards,
and they work with students to assess individual development.
RSD has engaged Subject Area Specialists for:
- Mathematics
- Science
- Social Studies
- English Language Arts
- Career Development/Occupational Studies (CDOS) and the Arts
From your first visit to our campus you will see how RSD provides
a complete experience in and out of the classroom. In fact, this has our
mission since our founding. Since 1876, RSD has helped children reach
their greatest potential by offering a fully accessible, interactive communication
environment including educational, evaluative and social programs
